Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a mixed up little clam, but it’s hard not to love it. Even more poignant is knowing the back story, that in 2011 Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp were a twosome and now they’re merely business partners. This strife is alluded to in the film, which were actually short YouTube viral sensations between 2011 and 2014, meaning, a few times Jenny Slate aka Marcel mentions to Dean, “you might have more successful relationships if you weren’t trying to film every moment”. Coincidence or just theatrical conflict, we may never know.

I found the interplay between Jenny and Isabellla Rosselini (aka Nana Connie) very moving and real. Not so much Leslie Stahl (eye roll)…I mean I get the schtick, her being a 60 Minutes idol of Marcel and Nana Connie, but something about her rubs me false…like running your palm over a burlap sack…

Still worth seeing.
